      Hello Fellow Trainers

Seriously…. I have been asked this question more times than I want to remember over the past 12 months. It’s almost like a buzz question! Really! Ever heard someone ask about strategy? Maybe you have?

Anyway, when I have been asked this question and by the way it lurked in a meeting I chaired this morning for a company Board, I have said it back in a different way AND asked ‘what is strategic thinking’ anyway? The answers were flung onto the Board table “it’s how to think about strategies”. I think it is a bit more than that. Right?

I am on an interview panel for a CEO role of a major iconic Australian organisation and they want a ‘strategic thinker’… so I got up to the white board of this Board meeting today and said “If I can show you a quick way in less than 10 min how to think of strategies to help you differentiate, would you want to know?” Well, they did and we did the Heirarchy of Ideas in 10 minutes and they had fun. Opened their minds. Now, here’s the thing, it’s a simple tool but has huge benefits for CEOs and Boards. They love to get out the SWOT, PESTEL and who knows what else to show their knowledge about analyses, but there is so much value in the Hierarchy of Ideas. Imagine the workshops you can run just on Hierarchy of Ideas! Just love it 🙂

So here is an article from Harvard Business Review that is of interest because right now, there is a market out there of people looking for high level jobs who don’t know how to differentiate themselves….don’t know how to best communicate their benefits, don’t know how to present to a panel etc etc. I’ve lead recruitment of company directors over the past 12 months and I can share with you that people need trainings and coaching!
