      hi,

I have a client who has lost her hearing and also has tinnitus.

Initially the tinnitus started when her husband left her and the children. She was on a plane in 1995 to go and find him in another country and the tinnitus started.

      It worsens with stress.

in 2002 she was divorced and some of her hearing was lost (only certain frequencies, mostly low) and the hearing was ok but not great.

in 2007 she lost a friend to a murder. While learning of this when watching the news that her friends body was being exhumed from a shallow grave, a friend called her to say turn on the news.

The news reported the police had seized recordings from a doctors office (my clients voice) as part of the investigation. The husband of the lady murdered had been recording their conversations and at that point her hearing basically disappeared but came back to the previous levels. in 2009 while testifying as a witness, she was asked a question in cross examination and her hearing completely disappeared and has not regained anything since (with the exception of a minor improvement since we started working, doors creeking, pens dropping, tapping on a key board)

since doing negative emotions, the hearing has slightly improved. she has secondary gain (the tinnitus means I can at least hear something therefore it can’t let it go) in the session we had the tinnitus from a 8 out of 10 to a 0.5 out of 10. as soon as I said the word “hearing” it instantly returned.

I gave tasking to focus on a pen tapping on the bench to have her focus on the hearing improving. this aggravated the tinnitus, hearing has not changed.

she is a doctor, so I am firstly challenged with her knowledge of biology (I asked if it was a Neurological problem which I received a rather long education about the difference between Neurological and Psychological)

secondly, I think if we’ve improved it in the room, but it’s come back worse, I’ve missed something. we haven’t done limiting decisions yet. when we tried to book her next appointment, she started questioning the invoice for the last appointment.

any help would be greatly appreciated… my feeling is if it can be improved and aggravated we are close to a breakthrough.

      thanks in advance

        Hi Justin,

Cheers on helping this client with her healing! Are you doing this as hourly sessions, a full breakthrough, or what is the format? From your language it sounded like shorter sessions. And given that you said you have done negative emotions but not limiting decisions yet.

This seems like something that really needs a full, comprehensive breakthrough according to the sequence of steps and Detailed Personal History questions in the Master Prac manual. So NEs, LDs, parts, values… the works. And following strictly to the personal breakthrough script in the manual. And then top it off with hypnosis for healing at the end after all the cleanup.

From your description it sounds like you have assessed that there are things she doesn’t want to hear, due to events in her past where she heard very unpleasant things. Not hearing helps her avoid hearing those kinds of unpleasant things. That would be a limiting decision to not hear. Or it could be a part that doesn’t want to hear those things to protect her. Also check in with health values for away froms, or perhaps there are cross cutting values with away froms.

If she doesn’t want to let go of Tinnitus because she wants to hear something, then why not ask if it would be ok with her and her UM to improve the hearing while silencing the tinnitus at the same time? And since you’ll be releasing any LDs/parts that prevent her from hearing, you may be able to kill two birds with one stone.

And what if during hypnosis you have her visualize a radio dial, and she’s tuning out of the tinnitus static and she’s tuning back into the sounds of reality, and you keep tuning that dial left… and right… and a little more… and back to the left a bit, until she says her external auditory submodalities have the utmost clarity, optimal volume, tone, timbre, etc. And you can train her UM to do this tuning automatically until the perfect quality sticks permanently.

Those are my thoughts based on the info you gave so far. Keep up the great work!

        Best,
        Adam

      Hey Mate,

Adriana and Laura are currently in the middle of the Summer Series Training Season so the response time will be a little longer then normal however I have put some notes below to give you something to go with.

So thanks for your question! Very interesting client you have by the sounds of things 😉 .

If the hearing started to improve with Time Line Therapy (R) then there is two things that I would look at to improve results. One is as you have mentioned Secondary Gain and in your clients case it appears that she has put herself into a double bind where by she can’t “let it go” being the Tinnitus because at least with it she has something she can hear however with is she can not hear.

So with a double bind the only way to get out of it is she needs to decide for herself to get out of it. You may need to do some pre-framing around Secondary Gain and Binds with her and it may even require doing some more Time Line Therapy (R) including Limiting Decisions Process.

Secondly if it gets triggered and flares up in specific instances then its worth while looking at the Point of Resolution Technique from the Master Practitioner Training After the other Time Line Therapy(R) has been done if it doesn’t disappear.

The Conflict with hearing is not wanting to hear something and because Tinnitus is internal you could look at what is it that she doesn’t want to hear internally about herself – as a metaphor.

Hope this helps – if I you would like clarity let me know.
